A long line formed in downtown Ogdensburg Thursday with some waiting hours to get a glimpse of the Stanley Cup and hometown sports hero Jimmy Howard.
Howard, an Ogdensburg native and member of the champion Detroit Red Wings, brought the prestigious cup to the Maple City for a day of public appearances and viewing.
On Ogdensburg's waterfront he patiently posed for photos and signed autographs for each person who waited in line.
Being part of an NHL championship team was surreal, he said. And bringing the cup to Ogdensburg for a day is right up there, too.
"Ever since I was playing street hockey on Hamilton Street and playing, you know, for the Stanley Cup and it's a dream come true to bring it here and allow all the fans from Ogdensburg and surrounding community to enjoy it," Howard said.
Earlier in the day he had taken the cup to several schools including Ogdensburg Free Academy.
In 1995 the NHL began a tradition in which each member of the championship team gets the cup for a day.
However, it never travels without an escort from the Hockey Hall of Fame.
