On this morning’s weather map, a cold front stretches from southeast Canada through the Hudson Valley of New York south to the Gulf Coast states with high pressure evident over the central portion of the country.
The above mentioned cold front has swept the unseasonably warm air out of the region with seasonably cooler air now working into the region. Consequently, temperatures will gradually fall through the 30s today as we’ll enjoy some limited sunshine.
By evening, the air may become marginally cold enough to induce lake effect clouds and even some flurries. The prospect for clouds and flurries should persist tonight. By tomorrow, the aforementioned high is forecast to work into the region and squash any lake effect clouds/flurries. The high is forecast to slowly work off the East Coast Wednesday, thus supplying the region with nice weather Tuesday and Wednesday.
Looking ahead to Thursday and Friday, a cold front is forecast to approach and eventually move through the region. As a result, the threat for snow showers will increase as will eventually the risk for lake effect flurries and squalls. Naturally, colder temperatures will arrive as well.
As for the weekend, there continues to be a consensus among computer models that the coldest air of the winter season will move into Central New York. Early indications point to the change occurring sometime on Sunday as low pressure and arctic cold front close in on the region Saturday. Again, it’s early but if current indications hold, Sunday may very well be a day of transition to bitterly cold air that may be with us next week.
