USDA to revamp school lunches
(WTNY) -- The recent decision by the USDA to revamp school lunches for the remainder of the year is drawing applause from North Country Congressman Bill Owens.
The revamping of the guidelines will now allow school districts to serve more meats and grains without having to worry about overall calorie counts. The new caps, which were put into place at the start of this school year, drew negative publicity with students complaining about the lack of food during lunch and of being hungry later in the school day. Owens says he wrote to the USDA earlier this year asking that the department revisit regulations.
The issue also popped up in this past year's Congressional campaign with both Owens and his opponent, Matt Doheny, visiting local school cafeterias and meeting with students.
