Unemployment rate in Northern New York nears 10% in May

Watertown (Nathan Lehma WTNY) -- The unemployment rate for Northern New York remains some of the highest in the state. The jobless numbers for the month of May were released on Tuesday. Jefferson County recorded an unemployment rate of 9.6% for the month. That's down from 10 % in April, but is up from 9.1% in May of last year. Lewis County's unemployment rate was 9.9%. Down from 10.2% the previous month, but also up from 9.1% last year. And in St. Lawrence County, the rate for May was 10.4%. Up from 10.1% in April and 10% in May 2011. The state wide average for the month was up to 8.6%.
