Volunteer fundraisers in Watertown are taking big strides against breast cancer.
Saturday's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk at Thompson Park netted $44,000, said Don Boshart of the American Cancer Society.
"To think that in this economy, we can raise that kind of money," Boshart said. "It really speaks to the kind of community support we have."
About 350 walkers participated, up from about 300 last year. The $44,000 total is up from $25,000 raised last year and $20,000 in 2007, the first year the walk was held.
Boshart said some of the thanks goes to sponsors of the event, including WWTI-ABC50.
