With Rep. John McHugh expected to be the new Secretary of the Army, who will be the next Congressman for the North Country?

The question may be largely moot, as McHugh's 23rd district may not exist after 2012, political observers say.

The 23rd is expected to be a target for elimination during redistricting in 2012 following the 2010 census.

That's particularly true if the Democratic party retains power in Albany, as it will control the redistricting process.

Assuming there is a strongly contested race, no obvious candidates come to the fore for either party, said Watertown Mayor Jeff Graham.

"The district is so spread out - there's no center of gravity," Graham said. That makes it hard for any one candidate to have the kind of name recognition that McHugh currently has, Graham said.

"From the Democrats' point of view, they may let it go, knowing they'll get it anyway in two or three years," Graham said.

On the other hand, the special election could produce another nail-biter similar to the special election in 2008 following the resignation of State Senator Jim Wright. See link to blogger at right.

Who should be the next congressman to replace John McHugh? The answer is John Smith. I talked with him and he upstanding, intelligent and ambitious, his honesty and moral character are above repute. Mr. Smith does not believe in graft or corruption. He is handsome and believes in the high standards in government and business. You have probably heard about him, he has already gone to Washington and has caused a sensation. Now some people think Sen. Aubertine is the perfect John Smith, some think it is Will Barclay and some like Debbie Scozzafava[ that is a hard name to spell.]One more quality that John Smith has, he takes a stand on Gays and marriage, John doesn't perch on the fence waiting to see what side will give him the most votes. John Smith is everyman, but does not try to be everyman, he just is. Yes, I like John, he is from a farm, and a river runs through it. He doesn't fish but he likes to see people stand on the bank throwing their hook in the water. Yes, John is everyman, he looks at home perched on his tractor and likes to plow the fields and milk the cows, he knows farmers. John Smith likes everybody but can speak his own mind. That is our next congressman, he is out there, look for the person and when you see him, you'll say "that's me."
