Massena's newly-idled GM plant could become home to a new facility for manufacturing wind turbines.
Massena is among three sites in New York being considered for two plants being developed by the D'Arcinoff Group of Washington, D.C.
The two sites chosen may be home to about 12,000 jobs, said company President and CEO Michael Darcy.
He declined to say how the jobs will be split up among the two sites chosen.
Besides Massena, a site in Syracuse and another he declined to identify are under consideration. "I actually think we'll pursue two of the three locations," Darcy said.
"We are very interested in Massena," Darcy said, emphasizing the "very."
His company will make use of automotive parts and automotive technology to build industrial-sized wind turbines. The more recently an automotive plant was idled, the more attractive it is to his venture, Darcy said.
His company could either buy or lease the GM facility in Massena, depending on negotiations with state officials. "We are fairly flexible," Darcy said.
While Darcy is looking for ideal locations, he said a strong local workforce "is as important as the facility."
He said his company will be involved in intense discussions with state officials and doesn't want to get local hopes raised too high.
