Watertown (Nathan Lehman WTNY) -- Watertown City Council has been presented specific plans for a new pavilion at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park to be built at the site of the aviary.

Council members met with officials at the zoo Monday night to go over those plans. According to the city engineer's office, the plan is to tear down the aviary and  build a pavilion. The estimated cost of the project is about $170,000.

The city council was initially looking to save the aviary, but costs of close to a million dollars made that project undesirable. In the end, they agreed to move ahead with the projects.

Plans are also in place to upgrade the children's zoo. Funding for that project will come from private sector fundraising according to Mayor Jeff Graham
