Recap: BYU vs. Utah
Provo, UT (Sports Network) - Tyler Haws tied the score, drained the go-ahead free throw, and made clutch free throws in the closing seconds to lift the BYU Cougars to a thrilling 61-58 decision over the Utah Runnin' Utes in a non- conference tilt at the Marriott Center.
Haws went 10-of-10 from the charity stripe to contribute 14 points for BYU (6-3), which won its fourth game in five outings. Matt Carlino scored a game- high 19 points and dished out five assists off the bench while Brandon Davies tallied 11 points, six rebounds, and three blocks.
Jordan Loveridge paced Utah (6-3) with 14 points. Glen Dean netted 10 points and Dallin Bachynski grabbed a team-high nine boards. The Runnin' Utes' loss snapped their two-game winning streak.
Utah outscored the hosts, 18-6, in the paint in the opening period on its way to a 35-26 halftime lead. The Cougars did not hold a lead at any point in the first half.
Loveridge made a layup just over three minutes into the second half to give the Utes a 41-30 lead. BYU rallied back to tie the score and take the lead with 4:21 left, but Utah answered. Renan Lenz drained a pair of free throws to put the Utes on top, 58-56, with 2:57 left in regulation before Haws completed an old-fashioned three-point play to push the Cougars back in front. Haws then sank a pair of free throws with 16 seconds left to put the contest out of reach.
Neither side had an impressive shooting performance. Utah made 36.5 percent of its field goal attempts while the Cougars shot just 31.1 percent from the floor.
This was the first game for BYU since its game scheduled for Wednesday with Utah State was postponed due to an Aggies player collapsing in practice a day earlier.Game Notes
