The Spaniard needed just under 1 1/2 hours to dispose of German Simon Greul
6-2, 7-6 (7-2) on the red clay at Costa do Sauipe-Salvador.
In other opening-round action on Day 1, Daniel Gimeno-Traver handled fellow
Spaniard Santiago Ventura 7-6 (9-7), 6-1 and Ricardo Mello of Brazil defeated
Italy's Paolo Lorenzi 6-2, 7-5.
This week's top seed is former world No. 1 and former French Open champion
Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain. The field also features last week's surprise
Santiago champion Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.
The 2010 Brasil Open titlist will pocket $75,700.
